Equinor, a Norwegian energy giant, has secured $3 billion in financing to bring New York’s Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm to life. Slated to power 500,000 homes when it becomes operational in 2027, Empire Wind 1 will be the first offshore wind farm directly connected to New York City’s power grid—marking a significant milestone for renewable energy in the United States.

Equinor’s announcement on January 2 confirmed that the project, with a capacity of 810 megawatts (MW), is now fully greenlit following the successful close of financing at the end of December. This development gives a substantial boost to New York’s burgeoning offshore wind industry and reinforces the US’s commitment to renewable energy despite political uncertainties.

While President-elect Donald Trump has voiced opposition to offshore wind projects, stating plans to scrap them via executive order, no concrete actions have been taken. Equinor and its financial partners appear unfazed, demonstrating their confidence in the long-term viability of the Empire Wind 1 project.

Competitive Financing for a Landmark Project

Strong interest from lenders enabled the project to secure competitive terms, with a diverse group of experienced lenders and Equinor’s long-term banking partners stepping up to back the initiative. Total capital investments for Empire Wind 1 are expected to reach $5 billion, including costs associated with the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal and anticipated tax credits. The $3 billion secured represents a significant portion of this investment.

“[This] financial close maintains our momentum toward bringing a significant source of power to the grid. Empire Wind 1 will strengthen US energy security, build economic growth, and fuel a new American supply chain,” said Molly Morris, Equinor’s senior vice president for renewables in the Americas.

Construction and Job Creation Underway

Situated 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island and spanning 80,000 acres, Empire Wind 1 is already under construction. The project is not only a key player in the clean energy transition but also a major driver of economic development. Over 1,000 union jobs are being created during the construction phase, thanks in part to the redevelopment of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.

The terminal, set to become the largest dedicated offshore wind port facility in the US, will play a crucial role in the project. It will house Empire Wind 1’s operations and maintenance hub and serve as the location for its onshore substation, making it a central hub for offshore wind activity.
