Japanese manufacturer announces a real revolution in its electric cars with solid batteries.
The Japanese firm has presented its plan focused on electric vehicles and the most cutting-edge technology for its batteries: a lot of autonomy at a meager price.
Solid-state batteries can be described as the eternal promise of the electric automotive sector. Almost all manufacturers have announced plans to develop and manufacture this component type. However, current technology still needs to be put up to par, and we will have to wait a few more years for its arrival. Likewise, brands continue working on their development, and Nissan is an excellent example of this.
It was during the celebration of the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show that the Japanese company made a whole presentation of future models and technology. On their stand, they have shown several electric conceptual models, including the future zero-emission Nissan GT-R. On the carpet of this event, the company also took the opportunity to show its intentions in terms of battery technology and that, if its plans are fulfilled, the long-awaited solid-state battery could be very close.

Kazuhiro Doi, Corporate Vice President of Research at Nissan, stated during an appearance at the Japanese event that “batteries will be the crucial technology for next-generation electric vehicles. With them, Nissan will take a great leap forward.” In general terms, these are postulated as the great revolution within the company since it will be able to present “almost double the energy density” of current batteries. This will give double the electric range to the vehicle in which it is mounted, faster recharging, and, no less critical, a lower purchase price.
According to the same manager, this will be a technology that “will adapt to any type of automobile” since, with a greater energy density, its total size and weight can be reduced. This will mean a before and after for developing sports vehicles since lightness is usually their advantage. Likewise, being smaller, they can be fitted more onto a type of vehicle, something that will be essential for trucks or vans. Among the company’s objectives is that its recharge times are reduced by a third compared to the current average.
Another point in favor of these solid-state batteries will be their optimal working temperature. According to Doi, these “operate well from room temperature to 100 degrees Celsius.” This could involve eliminating cooling components, which will further alleviate the weight of the assembly and its mechanical complexity.
The manager assured us that this technology is still being developed along with the first vehicle that will install it. The company’s roadmap indicates that the launch of this will be in 2028, although sometime before, they will begin to give details about both. “I hope to make an announcement very soon. The world needs to leave gasoline engines behind,” he stated. Currently, it is unknown which vehicle Nissan’s first solid-state battery will be installed. However, many indications point to a possible electric sports car that is capable of showing the capabilities of this component.
